Like Water for Chocolate

Like Water for Chocolate is actually one of my favorite books. The story takes place in Mexico. It is about a girl named Tita who wants to marry her love Pedro. She cannot however get married because her mother wants her to withold the tradition that the youngest daughter not get marrie but instead stays home to take care of her mother until she dies.

This film is very particular to what one would think of when thinking about Mexico. There are a lot of greens and bright floral colors. The landscape is beautiful whit rolling hills in some scenes and deserts in others. The clothing in the film is more traditional Mexican with a little western flare.

They speak Spanish throughout the film. I always think it is interesting to try and decipher where a movie takes place. In English we can tell which country the film is in because of the accents and the dialects. However when viewing a film in a different language it is a lot harder to tell. If I had not read the book and there was no mention of Mexico I’m not sure I would have been able to tell if this film were in Mexico or in Spain.
